Can You Add Automation to an Existing Pool?

By the BlueIQ Pools team ·

One of the most common questions we hear is whether an older pool can be automated without starting over. The answer is almost always yes.

What a retrofit involves

A typical retrofit adds an automation controller and load center near your equipment pad, then connects your existing equipment to it:

  • Pump - variable-speed pumps can often communicate with the controller directly; single-speed pumps are switched by a relay.
  • Heater - connected so it can be scheduled and controlled from your phone, with protection so it only runs when water is flowing.
  • Lights - switched and, for color lights, controlled for colors and shows.
  • Valves - actuators can be added for spa, spillover or water features.
  • Salt system - integrated or replaced with a compatible model.

What can be reused?

Most pumps, heaters and lights in good condition can stay. If something is near the end of its life, it often makes sense to replace it during the retrofit with a model that communicates fully with the new controller.

How long does it take?

Many retrofits are completed in a single day. More complex pads with spas, multiple valves or electrical upgrades may take longer.

Smaller upgrade options

If you only want app control of a few devices, a smaller system - such as a hub that adds smart control to existing equipment - can be a cost-effective starting point.
