Gas Pool Heater vs. Heat Pump: Which Is Better in New Jersey?
By the BlueIQ Pools team ·
Heating can add weeks to the New Jersey swim season. The two main choices are a gas heater and an electric heat pump. Each has a place.
Gas heaters
- Heat water quickly, regardless of outdoor temperature
- Ideal for spas and for heating the pool on demand
- Higher operating cost per degree of heat
Heat pumps
- Much lower operating cost - they move heat from the air instead of burning fuel
- Best for maintaining a steady temperature through the season
- Heat more slowly and lose efficiency as air temperatures drop below about 50F
Which fits New Jersey?
If you swim mostly from late May through September and want the pool warm all the time, a heat pump is usually the most economical choice. If you have a spa, want to swim in early spring or late fall, or only heat occasionally, a gas heater makes more sense. Some homeowners use both.
Automation makes either one better
With automation you can schedule heating, start the heater from your phone before you get home, and make sure it never runs without water flow.
