When Should You Close Your Pool in New Jersey?
By the BlueIQ Pools team ·
Closing your pool at the right time protects your equipment, prevents algae and makes spring opening much easier. Here is what we recommend to homeowners in New Jersey.
Wait for cooler water
Close once your water temperature drops below about 65F - typically late September through mid-October in New Jersey. Algae grows quickly in warm water, and closing during a warm spell traps that warm water under the cover.
What a proper closing includes
- Balancing the water and adding winterizing chemicals
- Lowering the water level as needed for your cover type
- Blowing out every plumbing line and plugging it
- Adding pool antifreeze to the lines
- Draining and winterizing the pump, filter and heater
- Removing and storing the salt cell
- Setting automation freeze protection where applicable
- Installing a properly tensioned safety or winter cover
The most expensive mistake
Skipping a thorough line blow-out. Water left in underground pipes or in the heater can freeze and crack them. Equipment repairs are costly, and underground plumbing repairs can mean cutting into the deck.
Do not forget the equipment
Heaters, salt cells and automation each need specific winterizing steps. A heater left with water in its heat exchanger is one of the most common winter casualties we see in spring.
Book early
Closing slots fill quickly from mid-September. Booking early gets you the date you want.
